The Good Guys

by Chad Williams [event founder & director]

The Good Guys vs Cancer Showcase came about after my dad, Guy Williams, Jr. was diagnosed with an extremely rare and aggressive form of leukemia and lymphoma,  Blastic Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cell Neoplasm (BPDCN),  in February 2018.That year, , we were extended an offer to play in the NCBCA Coaches vs Cancer event in Asheville. Brian Carver, Head Basketball Coach, at Enka High School has done an incredible job of running this event and I am forever grateful in his acceptance of my idea, our inclusion in the event, and his guidance. Every team is expected to do a fundraiser as a part of their trip to Asheville. My idea was to have our own showcase in the East with all proceeds going to Coaches vs Cancer. Within two weeks of Dad’s diagnosis we were included in the Asheville event and the field for the “Good Guys vs Cancer” was primarily filled. The teams year 1 were filled mostly with my friends across the state that are indeed some of the real “Good Guys” in coaching.

Dad wasn’t able to make it to the first event as he was fighting in the hospital and sadly passed away a few weeks later. Every year since, I assure you he has had the best seat in the house and watched every second.

Our goal this year is to raise $20,000 for cancer research and also to directly aid someone battling within our communities.

None of this would be possible without the generous support of our sponsors and community. Special thanks to the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, Chase Patterson and Albemarle Landscapes, Twiddy Realty, Cooper Hawk Realty, OBX Chevrolet, Rose Brothers Paving, Webb Wellman and all the staff of The Hoopstate, the Outer Banks Hilton and Ramada, Sherriff Doug Doughty and the Dare County Sheriff’s Office.

Most importantly thank you to my wife Melissa, my mom Betty, my brother Kevin, all of my family by blood and those friends I

consider, and my current and former players who have all invested to make this a reality.
