CARY -- North Pitt’s Zamareya Jones showed why she’s one of the top sophomores in the nation. The guard exploded after a quiet first half to help the Panthers win 45-40 over Wake Forest Heritage in overtime in The John Wall Invitational. Jones scored 14 straight points at one point in the second half and all of the Panthers’ points in the extra session. “Something just came up and I did what I was supposed to do,” Jones said with a smile. Heritage used a 9-0 first quarter in the first to gain control, highlighted by five points from Jayden Rhodes off the bench. North Pitt’s Aquarius Pettaway scored on a putback as time expired in the first to trigger an 8-1 spurt to tie the game at 10. The teams remained close, and a basket from Zykheia Staton in the final seconds put the Panthers up 16-14 at halftime. Zamareya Jones scored North Pitt’s last 10 points of the third, including a deep 3-pointer in the waning seconds to put the Panthers up 29-26. Jones’ steal and layup put North Pitt up four with six minutes to play in regulation, but Heritage struck back and retook the lead on a Rachel Travis 3-pointer to make it 34-33 with 4:38 to go. Jones’ free throw tied it at 38 with 1:17 remaining and became the last point for either team in regulation. Rhodes scored the first basket of overtime, but Jones answered with a jumper, then a 3-point play with 2:09 to put North Pitt ahead 43-40. Jones ended the game with two free throws to complete her personal 7-0 run. Jones finished with 26 points, four rebounds and four steals, Pettaway had five points and 13 rebounds, and J’Nadia Maye added six points and eight rebounds. For Heritage, Rhodes had 12 points and 11 rebounds, Sky Donaie had 12 points and six rebounds, and Chloe Williams provided six points, five rebounds and eight assists.
